If you’ve ever seen those huge pro-life displays of bloodied fetuses on a college campus, you’ll understand why I consider the pro-life movement less a political movement than a spiritual revival of pagan fertility cults.
In ancient Baal worship, Ashtoroth was daughter of the mother-goddess Asherah. This cult so influenced Hebrew culture that Ashtoroth became the Hebrew word for “womb” or “fruit of the womb,” according to the Holman Bible Dictionary.
In modern usage, Ashtoroth means fetus.
Biblical authors didn’t debate whether life began at conception. Instead, infertile matriarchs Sarah, Rachel and Hannah created a clear contrast with pagan fertility goddesses. Abraham’s willingness to murder his only son Isaac became the hallmark of faith. The prophet Hosea questioned the virtue of human life conceived through the adultery of temple prostitutes and false religion.
Early Christians substituted the Church as Bride of Christ for pagan mother-goddesses like Isis, Diana and Aphrodite.
Ancient fertility cult members believed the act of procreation pleased their gods, who then blessed the prosperity of their land. Nowadays, Focus on the Family preaches a parallel message, suggesting God is withholding his blessing from America because Christians haven’t yet outlawed abortions.
Sarah Palin would make an ideal mother-goddess.
